Bio

Born and raised in NY, with studios both in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Capri, Italy, Joan has been a painter for many years bridging both cultures into the texture of her work. With the roots of an islander, the sea is always present, as above, so below.

The shift has been in the direction for more site-specific work. Engaging with the space and the public, the creation of images that transform vision into a magical, metaphysical landscape.

Recently, Joan created the “Garden of Alchemy” and “Golden Nest”, both Byzantine-inspired gardens for the #100gatesproject on the Lower East Side of NYC.  These nature inspired public art pieces provided a respite from the hard edges of the city.

Summer 2016, Joan painted a “Global Village” inspired by Capri for the “Sing for Hope” piano project. The piano was painted and placed in a park near The Brooklyn Academy of Music, echoing Sing for Hope’s mantra of ART FOR ALL.

2014 brought the opportunity to transform a hospital space to a more nurturing environment called “Project Miele” based on the honeycomb and alchemy of light. The triptych is a permanent painting installation at the Hess Center for Science + Research, Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, NY.
